Five years ago I was staying in a lighthouse on Hoy. The lighthouse was situated on the edge of cliff and looking across the sea you could see another three lighthouses. All four lighthouses had a different light pattern. Aside from the stars, it was one of the best light shows I've experienced.

Fast forward five years and I discovered that these light patterns follow a formula. Not only that but because these light patterns help seafarers navigate the sea at night, these patterns are available for every light in the British Isles.

That's 1,159 lights, lighthouses, buoys and vessels across the UK. I focused on all the lights and lighthouses that cover the coastline of Scotland, Wales and England. This print maps those light patterns where the lights have been arranged like a compass so the most northerly is situated at the top, the eastern lights to the right and the western to the left.

Each pattern can last anywhere between 2 and 30 seconds and repeats eternally. The length of the line indicates the length of this repeating pattern and the circles indicate where they flash.
