The experience of listening to bird song is immersive but you often stare up at the trees and rarely see the birds. So what does the dawn chorus actually look like?

This piece has been created using a recording of the dawn chorus from the British Library sound archives. This audio file was translated into data using amplitude analysis. The resulting values follow a similar pattern to the one you would see on an equaliser.

This information then took inspiration from music staves (the 5 stripes within the ribbons) and merged it with the rising sun and the organic shapes of tree branches.
