Dazzle patterns were devised in the WWI to conceal the movement of ships on the sea. But can you create a dazzle pattern from the very thing it was designed to deceive? The movement of sea.
The dazzle pattern was created using information from 54 buoys dotted around the coastline of the British Isles. Each buoy is represented by a different square where the grid has been arranged by longitude and latitude, where the top left represents the north west of Scotland and the bottom right represents the south east of England.
This information is updated in real time. This pattern takes information from sunrise on the first day of meteorological winter.
The direction of the polygons indicate the direction of swell as it reaches the coast. The colours are inspired by the sea and the pink and red squares are designed to evoke memories of the faded buoys seen in harbours. These pink squares indicate sites where the wave height was over 14ft.
