SEA TO SUMMIT

Standing atop a mountain, the first thing I do is to look what you can see. For me, that tends to be water. After walking in the Lake District, Yr Wyddfa and Cairngorms fairly close in time, I wondered which were closest to the sea.

Obviously there's data that can tell you that.

Or in this case maps. And so I pinpointed each of the main peaks in a selection of national parks across the UK. I then used a compass, centred on the summit, and increased its size, until any part of the circle touched the sea. 

My bet was on Snowdonia but it turns out my instinct was wrong. The answer was closer to home.
