Feathers are amazing things and I began to notice patterns within the tiny vanes. I realised that this feather could be recreated using formulas. And what better data to create a feather from than the number of birds.

Using data from the British Bird Atlas, I compared the most commonly recorded birds in the most recent survey with the same birds 40 years earlier.

The resulting image is as two sided as the feather itself. Some species have decreased whilst some have thrived.

The left side of the feather plots the most recent results and the right hand side reflects the same birds 40 years earlier. The print comes with the list of all 100 birds that have created the feather. A small dot next to the species indicates those that have thrived.
