PRESS ON
The printing bike is Nick Hands custom made bicycle that has been built to carry him, his luggage and an adana printing press. Press on is his third adventure (the first two seeing him travel around the coastline of the UK visiting makers), which sees him set off again around Britain but this time visiting libraries and printing bookmarks in collaboration with a variety of artists. The bookmark on the left is my design for the Scottish Poetry Library in Edinburgh and takes inspiration from Ellen Rentons poem ‘passing’. The poem is rooted in the notion that the earth is not ours to destroy and we’re merely passing through, which shares the same fleeting passage of Nicks cycle. The map has been created from the words by translating each letter into its numerical ASCII code to create the twist of the river, the curves of the contours and the bends in the road.

ASH RISE
20 makers and designers were selected as part of the Ash Rise project back in March 2024. The project aimed to celebrate the ash tree in light of many trees having to be felled due to Ash Die Back. This exhibition seeks to educate about the disease as well as showcasing the potential of this material and the objects that can be crafted from a single tree. There is also an interview on the Scotland Outdoors Podcast with me and some of the other makers as we collected our wood at the beginning of the project.
