It always amazes me to discover that logos are more recognisable to many than tree species. It amazed me even more to discover how little data is available on trees.
Using data from the ancient tree inventory, this piece explores native tree species (as well as long standing non natives such as sycamore and sweet chestnut) where the positioning of each tree left to right indicates the proportion standing.
The width of the tree represents the girth by species, the height is scaled to the tallest known specimen in Britain and the markings represent the distribution across the British Isles from the most northerly at the top to most southerly at the base.
