Visualising the light characteristics of all 200 lighthouses around the British Isles, as each lighthouse has a different flash light pattern.

Lighthouses are something I am continually drawn back to. And each time I return to these light patterns, I find something new.

This time I have added a few more patterns to be found, from the sculpting of the rocks to the breaks in the sea.

The light patterns themselves are shown over the course of thirty seconds, as though you're watching the light display of every lighthouse in Britain at the same time.

Details

Using data from every light characteristic of every light and lighthouse in England, Scotland and Wales, each light beam represents the pattern of an individual light.

Ordered geographically, the most northerly lights are at the top, the most southerly at the bottom, eastern lights are to the right and western are to the right.

The location of the patterns can also be found in the sea and in the rocks. The breaks in the sea indicate how many lights are positioned by latitude, where the most northerly, 60°N, are represented by the top line and the most southerly, 49°N, are represented by the bottom.

The rock below the lighthouse shows the number of lighthouses by longitude (west to east - left to right) and the rock in the foreground shows the cumulative number of lighthouses by focal length.
