Tree rings don't just reveal the age of a tree. Once you know how to read rings, you can reveal intricate weather forecasts dating back to when it was planted.

The Details

This specific print is based on a one off print that was produced for the ash rise project that is currently touring Scotland. The project champions the ash tree in light of the ash die back disease by bringing together 20 artists to create objects from a single ash tree.

This particular tree had succumb to the disease but had stood proud near the banks of Loch Lomond for 200 years.

The weather data was taken from the same location of the tree and so revealed the very climate that had nurtured its growth.

Each ring normally represents a year but to better tell the changes in the weather, each ring within this print represents an individual day. The undulating changes throughout each ring show the variation on that day across multiple years. The lines indicate rainfall and the gaps reveal the temperatures. And so long lines and a small gap infer cold and wet days.
