Ash Rise: WeatheRings
Ash Rise: WeatheRings
Tree rings don't just reveal the age of a tree. Once you know how to read rings, you can reveal intricate weather forecasts dating back to when it was planted.
In some cases this means hundreds of years of weather data. This print was produced using the same techniques used in dendrochronology to reverse engineer the shape of tree rings using weather data.
This specific print is based of a one off print that was produced for the ash rise project that is currently touring Scotland. The project champions the ash tree in light of the ash die back disease, which will decimate the UKs ash tree population, by bringing together 20 artists and makers to showcase the possibilities of using the wood from these trees in the hope that it can avoid being used as firewood.
The weather data has been taken from the same point that these ash trees were felled and so reveals the very climates they had beared witness too. Each ring represents an individual day measured of multiple years. The lines indicate rainfall and the gaps reveal the temperatures.
