Re-imagining bird eggs to show the breeding patterns through markings.
I used to think I knew a bit about birds. I could identify most by their appearance and recognise a few by their song. But until I visited an exhibition 10 years ago about bird nests and eggs, I didn't realise how little I knew.
With a desire to find out more, this book is the result.

Using data from all the breeding birds in Britain, by location and over a 40 year period, a narrowed my selection to 12 different species based on them having a distinct breeding pattern as well as showing a variety of egg markings, colours, shapes, sizes and habitats.
I then re-imagined the shape of an egg as the map of Britain and whilst staying true to the size of the egg, it's colour and shape, I recreated the markings to reflect the breeding locations of the bird in focus. The markings have varying shades, again true to the actual eggs, but I decided to use this shading to show patterns over time. So the darker the colour, the more recent the distribution.
