My desk looks onto a bird feeder and during lockdown I began to wonder what was the most frequent colour flying into our gardens?
Using data from the garden bird watch and image analysis of RSPB illustrations, I set out to answer my own question.
Focusing on the top 20 birds that are seen in the most gardens across the UK, I studied the profile of each male bird to determine what colours were visible and what proportion of the bird was covered in each of those colours.
By combining these two pieces of information, each visible colour could be ranked by hue, in order of the most commonly seen colour flying into our gardens.
